Dr. Kim Matheson, Vice-President (Research and International)

The Vice-President (Research and International)

Dr. Matheson was appointed Vice-President (Research and International) in November 2009. She joined the Department of Psychology at Carleton University in 1990 as a SSHRC Canada Research Fellow and was promoted to full professor in 2003. She received her PhD in 1988 from the University of Waterloo and is a Carleton alumna (BAHons/82, MA/83). She is a highly accomplished researcher and graduate supervisor and is widely published in the areas of Social and Health Psychology. Her work concerns the impacts of group based stressors – stigma, immigration, cross-cultural differences, prejudice and discrimination – on the physical and mental health of members of disadvantaged social groups. Together with her collaborators in neuroscience, her work aims to understand the psychosocial factors that promote resilience in the face of stressors that disproportionately affect particular social and cultural groups, with the aim of designing intervention programs and to inform public policy. She is one of the few researchers to have been funded by all three major funding agencies: Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Dr. Matheson has considerable administrative experience at the departmental, faculty and university levels. She was the Acting Vice-President (Research and International) at Carleton University from 2007 to 2009. As Chair of the Department of Psychology from 1997 until 2003, she presided over the largest academic unit at the University. She has served on the Senate, the Senate Financial Review Committee and was a member of the University Task Force on Planning and Priorities. She is currently a member of the Advisory Board for the Social Interactions, Identity, and Well-being, the Panel of the Canadian Institutes for Advanced Research, and the Scientific Board of the Institute of Mental Health Research at the Royal Ottawa Hospital.

Given her administrative and academic experiences, Dr. Matheson’s goals for the research enterprise are to advance the university’s strategic vision and to build on our considerable disciplinary strengths and advance our capacity for cross-disciplinary communication and collaboration. She plans to actively promote Carleton’s researchers to establish strong partnerships that work toward advancing solutions to real world problems, and to provide students with a rich environment in which to develop the skills to contribute and excel within a global environment.
