Mr. William and Mrs. Jean Teron presented eight students with the Teron Award, and a further eight earned honorary mention at a luncheon held at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism on Wednesday, 2 November, 2011.

Architectural designer William Teron, known as the “Father of Kanata,” says students in the Azrieli School of Architecture and Urbanism are beginning to understand his message to strive for excellence as outstanding holistic lead architects who challenge an architectural team on physical, social, environmental and economic levels.

For the first time since Teron and his wife Jean established an award in his name in 2007, that is presented solely on merit, eight students are receiving the awards this year, and a further eight have earned honorary mention. The Teron awards will be given out at Carleton on Nov. 2.

‘Active Voice: Vocality as Medium, Object and Material’

Founded in 2008, the Surrey Art Gallery’s Sound Thinking symposium is an annual one day event which brings together practitioners and professionals in the field of sound art. The symposium features leading sound artists, scholars and researchers in the field sound studies, along with visual artists who use sound as key components of their practice and musicians who experiment with the limits of music and sound. A diverse array of other contributors have made presentations at the event including audiologists, audio engineers, music critics, and filmmakers.

Sound Thinking 2011 is presented concurrently with the Open Sound 2011 sound art exhibition Nests Built by Birds organized by Surrey Art Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Jordan Strom. Situated around the Surrey Arts Centre’s site, this fourth annual Open Sound program presents three works of sound art related to voice and translation. Vancouver’s Ensemble SISYPHE present’s Clang Clagan in the winter, followed by Saskatoon artist Ellen Moffat’s installation vBox in the spring and summer, and finishing with the current exhibition Dhunia by Ottawa-based artist Dipna Horra.

Two recent graduates of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies program at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism were recognized at the 2011 Ottawa Urban Design Awards this week. Henry Gao and May Makia received Awards of Excellence and Merit (respectively) in the student category for work completed in the 4th year Housing studio in the fall of 2010. The 4th year Housing studio was coordinated by Professor Benjamin Gianni. Comments from the jurors were read when May and Henry received their awards. Both projects were praised for their innovation in organizing high-density, mixed-demographic housing on urban sites and for setting high standards for infill development. Both projects will go on to compete nationally in the RAIC Urban Design Awards.

Approximately 10 Carleton students submitted to the Ottawa Urban Design Awards this year — more than in previous years. All submissions were displayed at a gala at the Ottawa Convention Centre on Tuesday, Oct. 11th. It was an exceptionally strong showing by all of Architecture students.

H. Masud Taj, Adjunct Research Professor and Contract Instructor at the Azrieli School of Architecture & Urbanism, along with Bruce Meyer, will be reading selections [or reciting poems] from their new book Alphabestiary: An Emblem Book on Friday, 14 October, 2011.

———————

A POETRY SYMPOSIUM, SPONSORED BY THE UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

Friday Oct 14, 730 – 9 PM
Room 147 B Fauteux Building, 57 Louis-Pasteur
University of Ottawa Campus

The authors will be reading selections from (or reciting poems included in) their new book Alphabestiary: An Emblem Book, published by Exile Editions. This new volume contains a collection of poems and prose pieces where every letter of the alphabet represents a different animal. In a rare conversation between the traditions of Eastern and Western poetry, two unique voices come together in a mutual celebration of life on this planet as we know it. Bring your Smartphones because this is the first literary book to feature built in QRs (Quick Response codes).

H. Masud Taj is an oral poet, calligrapher and architect [licensed in India] whose poems have been featured in anthologies of Indian poets (Penguin Books India 2002; Wespennest Austria 2006; Bloodaxe UK 2008; TLR USA 2009) as well as Canadian poets (Atlas 2007; Rogue Stimulus 2010). He is an Adjunct Professor of Architecture at Carleton University in Ottawa. Bruce Meyer is the author of thirty one books of poetry, fiction, non-fiction, pedagogy and literary journalism including the national bestseller, The Golden Thread. Meyer is the inaugural Poet Laureate of the City of Barrie and a professor of English at Georgian College. Both are featured readers this year at the International Festival of Authors in Toronto.

The reading will be followed by a question and answer/discussion period, moderated by Sean Moreland. The authors look forward to an open dialogue with the audience, and will happily sign copies of their work.

The event is free to all, but in keeping with the animal theme of the book, donations will be taken at the door (pay what you can, but a recommended minimum of $2) for the Ottawa Humane Society.

Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.
