If you have a special interest in the natural world, if you are concerned about the exploitation of resources, pollution, and global warming, if you feel you would like to participate in developing solutions to environmental problems but are not quite sure where to begin, Environmental Science may be the program of choice for you.

Protection of the environment, its plants and wildlife, and the effects of pollution on human health are burning issues. They may be as local as the planning of a pipeline or as broad-ranging as global climate change.

Environmental scientists are key participants in the risk assessments associated with environmental concerns—ones that typically include a combination of biology, chemistry, geology (earth sciences), and geography.

The Environmental Science program at Carleton University has been assessed as one of the best in Canada. It is designed to provide broad and interdisciplinary knowledge. Graduates of the program are now actively involved in environmental work and graduate studies in Canada and around the world.

The Environmental Science program at Carleton University is accredited by Environmental Careers Organization (ECO) Canada. Only two other Canadian universities currently share this distinction. Accreditation signifies that our program has been specifically recognized for equipping undergraduates to be successful and competent environmental scientists when entering the job market. Accreditation is a new national process under the auspice of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Commission, which oversees the certification of environmental professionals. After graduation and five years of experience, graduates will be able to write their professional certification exams, similar to engineers obtaining their Professional Engineering Certification. The major benefit of this accreditation is the assurance that our program is highly relevant in the dynamic Canadian environmental industry, which gives students and graduates of the program a competitive edge when they are looking for career development or employment.
