Carleton University is a leader in the development of innovative teaching methods and learning for English as a second language. The English as a Second Language division of the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies (SLALS) offers credit courses with a strong emphasis on English for academic purposes:

Introductory Credit ESL ESLA 1300 During university terms:
Sept. – Dec., Jan. – Apr., May – Aug.
9 hours per week,
one term, one credit
Intermediate Credit ESL ESLA 1500 During university terms:
Sept. – Dec., Jan. – Apr., May – Aug.
6 hours per week,
one term, one credit
Advanced
Credit ESL
ESLA 1900 During university terms:
Sept. – Dec., Jan. – Apr., May – Aug.
6 hours per week,
one term, one credit
Advanced
ESL for Engineering Students
ESLA 1905 During university terms:
Sept. – Apr. (for Engineering and Design students only)
3 hours per week,
two terms, one credit

These courses form a foundation program that allows eligible students to fulfill an English language requirement while beginning their degree studies.
