International Development Week (IDW) 2012 will take place from February 5 to 10, 2012.
IDW allows for members of the Carleton community to develop greater international understanding, while learning about different opportunities to become engaged as global citizens.
The International Student Services Office, in collaboration with other university partners, work to offer programs and events throughout IDW.
International Development Week 2012 Programs:
International Soccer Tournament Register your team or come cheer on your peers. The tournament will take place on Sunday February 5, from 11:00am to 3:00pm, in Carleton University Fieldhouse. The registration deadline has been extended to Thursday February 2 at 12:00pm, come pick up your team’s registration package and not that teams are registered on a first come first serve basis. We look forward to seeing you there!
The Through a Global Lens Photography Competition Visit the fourth floor of the University Centre, from Monday February 6 to Wednesday February 8, to vote for your favorite photos. The winners of the competition will be announced on Thursday February 9, at 3:00pm, at the exhibit.
Table Exhibits Stop every day by the various information tables set up in the fourth floor of the University Centre, by different on campus and student groups looking to create awareness about international opportunities and development projects. You will be able to meet with individuals from student organizations including UNICEF, HOLAS, AISEC, and the ISC. In addition, make sure to stop by the ISSO table to learn about exchange opportunities currently still available and about the Students for Development program.
Youth’s Power to Influence Development Join the conversation hosted by the Humanitarian Organization of Latin American Students (HOLAS), on Tuesday February 7 from 2:30pm to 4:00pm in the International Student Lounge at the ISSO (128 University Centre). Clubs and students interested in development are welcomed to join this informal conversation.
International Development Opportunities: Student Experiences Panel Join us on Friday February 10, 2012 at 12:00pm in room 1501 CTTC building. Learn about opportunities available to Carleton students in the area of international development, directly from peers who have recently returned from their experiences abroad. This will be a great opportunity for members of the Carleton community to develop greater international understanding, while learning about different opportunities to become engaged in international development. Our panel will consist of students who have recently returned from their experiences abroad:
Kristina Smith, a fourth year student, majoring in Political Science and History. Kristina travelled to Tanzania as part of the Students for Development Program during the Fall 2011.
Niamh O’Shea, a fourth year undergraduate student from Ottawa, majoring in Human Rights and Women and Gender Studies. Niamh was an intern in Chinsapo, Malawi also through the Students for Development program, wherein she worked with local orphans and vulnerable youth on education and skill-building, and with marginalized women on income generating activities.
Khadija Ga’al is a fourth year Public Affairs and Policy Management and African Studies student who recently participated in the first African Studies Study Abroad course which took place at the Centre for Civil Society at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in Durban, South Africa in May 2011. She also interned at UKZN’s Health Economics and HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD), which is a UNAIDS collaborating centre, as part of an African Studies placement.
Brittony Chartier is a second year M.A.candidate in History and currently working on a thesis entitled, “Reversing the Gaze: the African Diaspora in Britain on Europe and European Affairs, 1933-1937″. An undergraduate of Political Science from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, Brittony travelled abroad this summer to Tanzania with Carleton’s Students for Development program. While there she spent three months working with Peace Matunda school and orphanage. Before visiting Africa Brittony had experience overseas having travelled to Germany and Switzerland representing Canada on the National Under-22 hockey team
