Home / Gairdner Lecture

On October 28, two top medical researchers will visit Carleton University to speak to current and prospective students, faculty and staff.

Event Details:
October 28
9:30-11:00 a.m. (please note updated end time!)
Porter Hall, 2nd floor University Centre, Carleton University
Please RSVP — This event is at capacity and the RSVP system is closed

Speakers:

  • Peter Doherty, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, University of Melbourne, Australia
Won a Gairdner in 1986 for his work on how the immune system recognizes virus-infected cells. He went on to win a Nobel in 1996.
  • Harald zur Hausen, Professor Emeritus, recent Chairman and Scientific Director, German Cancer Center, Heidelberg, Germany
Won a Gairnder and a Nobel in 2008 for the discovery of the causative role of papilloma viruses in cancer of the cervix, which lead to the development of a successful HPV vaccine.

The goal of this lecture is to inspire Carleton students and local high school students to pursue careers in science. The speakers will tell stories about how they became interested in science and their field of research, what they have each discovered and its meaning.

This lecture is part of the Gairdner National Program in which Gairdner winners visit universities across the country to speak to faculty and students.

This event is at capacity and the RSVP system is closed.
